Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering

Electronics & Communication Engineering deals with the electronic devices, circuits, communication equipments like transmitter, receiver, integrated circuits (IC). It also deals with basic electronics, analog and digital transmission & reception of data, voice and video (Example AM, FM, DTH), microprocessors, satellite communication, microwave engineering, antenna and wave propagation. It aims to deepen the knowledge and skills of the students on the basic concepts and theories that will equip them in their professional work involving analysis, systems implementation, operation, production, and maintenance of the various applications in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering.

What does an Electronics & Communication Engineer do?
All of the applications which make our life easier and enjoyable such as Television, Radio, Computers, Mobiles etc. are designed and developed by Electronics and Communication Engineers
  • Design and maintain satellites, which bring TV, telephone and Internet service into remote and rural regions
  • ECE Engineers also creates advanced communication facilities like video conferencing which bring people together from all over the world
  • Develops programs for various control and communication systems
Opens up great career prospects for the students. The students after completion of the degree can easily avail job opportunities in manufacturing  industries and service organizations such as broadcasting, consulting, data communication, entertainment, research and development  and system support. The candidates can also work in modern multimedia service firms that are involved in real-time transfer of information through video conferencing and internet broadcasting. The opportunities are galore for electronics and communication engineers as they are employed in variety of sectors such as Indian Telephone Industries, Civil Aviation, Development Centers in various States, Defense, NPL, A.I.R, Posts and Telegraph Department, Railways, Bharat Electronics Limited, D.R.D.O, Telecommunication, Software Engineering/IT, Power sector, Hardware Manufacturing, Home Appliance and VLSI design, Television Industry and Research & Development. Electronics and communication has a lot of scope in this modern era of wide application of electronics. Electronic engineers are the backbone of all components developed like integrated chips, transistors, fiber optics etc. Electronics engineers have achieved ample development in areas such as telecommunication, health care, automation, signal processing, satellite technology, microelectronics, nanotechnology etc. A four year course equips students with design, analysis and manufacturing of electronic devices. Electronic engineers have job opportunities in telecommunication, Software Engineering, Power sector, Hardware Manufacturing, Home Appliance, VLSI design, Television Industry, Process Industries, medical instrumentation etc. They have lucrative jobs in embedded systems, Integrated Circuit manufacturing, Signal Processing, Circuit designing etc. Electronic engineers can pursue careers in areas like defense, Space and other research organizations for designing and development of complex devices and systems for signal processing and telecommunication. An electronic engineer can find jobs in Consumer electronics manufacturing organization, IT industries, Mobile communication, Internet technologies, Power Electronics, and other industries like steel, petroleum and chemical industry, directing control and testing production process etc. Those who wish to go for higher studies can opt M.Tech and Ph.D after qualifying GATE exam.

MoU – HYBRID CHIP TECHNOLOGIES LTD.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), initiated by ECE Department,was signed on 9th January 2017 between HYBRID CHIP TECHNOLOGIES LTD and KMEA. HYBRID CHIP TECHNOLOGIES LTD provides multiple IT solutions and services based on Embedded projects. Through this MoU, HYBRID CHIP TECHNOLOGIES LTD will provide the following supports to KMEA.

  • To improve the skill set of engineering students in electronics industry.
  • To bridge the gap between college education and industrial requirement.
  • To facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • To provide in-plant training and project help for the students.
  • To assit the college in placement activities in the sense of introducing and developing contacts and relationship with industries.
  • To make the students more employable.
GEE (GUILD OF ELECTRONIC ENGINEERS)
GEE, the electronics Association of KMEA Engineering College is the joint endeavor of the staff and students of electronics and communication department. Gee organizes programs and activities in the field of electronic engineering for the benefit of the engineering fraternity and the advancement of general welfare.

 OBJECTIVES
  1. To organize an association day on each academic year.
  2. To organize programs and activities in the field of electronic engineering for the benefit of the engineering fraternity and the advancement of general welfare.
  3. To conduct lecture series, seminars, workshops, discussions, demonstrations, industrial visits, contests & competitions and also assign projects to students.
  4. To organize a farewell day at the end of every academic year.
To fulfill all the proposed plans from the department which would lead to the technical advancement of KMEA Engineering College.

Inauguration
Inaugurated by PROF. S THOMAS, Chief Technology Officer, VVDN Technologies, USA on 21st august 2013 at KMEA Engineering College. The Director, Principal and Head of the departments were present at that auspicious moment.

Technical Talk on ‘Engineering Design’
Prof. S Thomas, Chief Technology Officer, VVDN Technologies delivered an excellent talk on the topic ‘Engineering Design’ on 21st august 2013 for the students and faculties of Electronics and communication engineering department.

Technical Talk on ‘Design with Microcontrollers’
Mr. Niras, a Freelancer in Electronics delivered an excellent talk on the topic ‘Design with Microcontrollers’ on 9th January 2014 for the students and faculties of Electronics and communication engineering department.

KAINOTOMIA: Quiz Competition by GEE
The KMEA Engineering College witnessed the battle of grey cells at an intra College Quiz Competition ‘KAINOTOMIA’ conducted by GEE (Guild of Electronics Engineers), the association of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, which concluded here on Thursday 13th August 2015. The competition was inaugurated by the Principal, Dr. T K Mani. The Quiz masters were Mr. Azvad V A and Mr. Amal Augustine from S7 ECA. The competition was aimed at developing the knowledge and excellence base among the students through healthy and highly motivating meet.The competition was divided into two rounds. In the first round there were 21 batches of 2 students participated. Out of this five batches were selected to the second round. In the second round Mr. Azvad V A bombarded the students with questions. The questions are from different technical branches. Mazes of intuited and interesting questions were asked to the students, testing each aspect of the educational knowledge base like Engineering knowledge, famous quotes, science etc. Hassan Sahl and Akhil George of S7 CE-A students bagged the top honours while Ravi Shankar and Jipson Baby of S7 CS stood second. Farhan Mohammed Rashid and Amritha Santhosh of S7 EC-A showed an amazing performance and a great spirit and positioned themselves as the third.

Chennai relief fund
In association with NSS program for Chennai relief fund, GEE collected different type of food packets, clothes and water bottles as an urgent help from serious flood for the peoples of Chennai.

In the second round Mr. Azvad V A bombarded the students with questions. The questions are from different technical branches. Mazes of intuited and interesting questions were asked to the students, testing each aspect of the educational knowledge base like Engineering knowledge, famous quotes, science etc. Cash prize is given to first and second places.

The department library has  technical literature, training material on Central service examinations, GATE and other competitive exams. The digital library hosts a copious collection of e-books on technical subjects. The library is open to all students of the college from 9 am to 5.30 pm on all working days. Books are issued to the students and staff for a period of 15 days.
Talk on, “RECENT TRENDS IN EMBEDDED SYSTEM”.
Department of Electronics and Communication, KMEA Engineering college in Association with TEP cell organised a one day talk on, “RECENT TRENDS IN EMBEDDED SYSTEM”. Inauguration held on 28th November 2018 at 1.30pm by Prof. Rekha Laxmanan, Vice Principal, KMEA Engineering College. Prof. Smitha K M (HOD EC) , Mr. Binish M C (TEP Cell Department Coordinator)  and all Staff & Students of the department were present. The Session handled by Mr. Alex Abraham, NeST, Technopark. The purpose of this training session is to build a solid working knowledge of Microcontrollers, IoT and Raspherry Pi and it is an attempt to introduce and familiarize the basics of embedded systems to the beginners, and to build confidence among faculty and students to take up project in this area.
Hands-On Workshop on “ELECTRONIC PRODUCT DESIGN”
Department of Electronics and Communication, KMEA Engineering college organised a one week (From 2nd  July to 6th July 2018) training program on , “ELECTRONIC PRODUCT DESIGN” In Association with IETE Students Forum & IEDC(Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Cell). Inauguration held on 2nd  July 2018 at 9.30am by Dr. Rekha Laxmanan, Vice Principal, KMEA Engineering College. Mrs Manju Bhasker (HOD EC) , Mr. Binish M C (Programme Coordinator)  and HODs of all departments were present. The purpose of this training session is to build a solid working knowledge of power supplies, design principles of regulated power supplies, various types of voltage regulators, PCB design and oscillator circuit. The Hands-on exercises help the students to build experience on the subjects and it make the students think of different practical aspects of electronic manufacturing. The training programme completed on 6th July and distributed the certificates by the principal.   

 
Training Program On “CCTV INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN”
 ADDITIONAL SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAMME (ASAP), A joint initiative of Higher Education Department and General Education Department, Government of Kerala  in association with KMEA Engineering college organised a 200 hr training program, “CCTV Installation Technician” under the DAT (Design align and Train) scheme. Inauguration held on 16th April 2018 at 10.am by college principal Dr. Amar Nishad T. M.  The purpose of this training session is to build a solid working knowledge of various types of surveillance camera, DVR and network devices for online monitoring. This training covered different analog, digital, Hybrid and IP solutions and products. A hands-on exercise on different types of camera & DVR helps the students to build experience on the subjects. The training programme will assessment by SSC (Sector Skill Council) and will certified by both NSDC and ASAP, Kerala. As part of the course internship of 150 Hr provided to all students in various CCTV companies.

 
ASAP Training program “CCTV INSTALLATION TECHNICIAN”
ADDITIONAL SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAMME (ASAP), A joint initiative of Higher Education Department and General Education Department, Government of Kerala  in association with KMEA Engineering college organised a 200 hr training program, “CCTV Installation Technician” under the DAT(Design align and Train) scheme. Inauguration held on 5th April 2017 at 10.am by Dr. V. P Devassia, Additional director, IHRD. The purpose of this training session is to build a solid working knowledge of various types of surveillance camera, DVR and network devices for online monitoring. This training covered different analog, digital, Hybrid and IP solutions and products. Hands-on exercises help the students to build experience on the subjects. The training programme, assessment by SSC (Sector Skill Council) and internship of students in various leading CCTV companies were completed by July 2017.

Seminar on “EMI/EMC”
A Seminar for getting an idea  about Electro Magnetic Inteference/Electro Magnetic Compatibility which is essential for electronoic product  design was organized by the Department of Electronics and Communication  for the M.Tech students in Communication Engineering on 23rd February 2017.The sessions are handled by Smitha K.M.,Associate professor,ECE,KMEA Engineering College,Aluva

Training On “PCB DESIGN”
Youth employment issues are a major concern for many countries because they have negative effects on the welfare of young people, and may also adversely affect economic performance and social stability. The reasons for higher youth-to-adult unemployment rates include labour demand and supply factors, as well as constraints in the labour and credit markets. Their relative importance in a dynamic growth context varies across countries. Recognizing these differences is important for governments in designing youth employment programs tailored to the most affected youth groups, and to incorporating in program design specific interventions to address the underlying causes of youth unemployment and underemployment. District industries centre, govt of Kerala in association with KMEA Engineering College organised a 20 day training program on ‘PCB Design’ under the skill development scheme for entrepreneurship. Inauguration held on 17th March 2014 by general manager, district industries centre at KMEA Engineering College campus.
Training On “LED LAMP MANUFACTURING”
District industries centre, govt of Kerala in association with KMEA engineering college organised a 20 day training program,’ Training on LED Lamp Manufacturing’ under the skill development scheme for entrepreneurship. Inauguration held on 31st October 2014 by general manager, district industries centre at KMEA Engineering College campus.                                                                                                                 
Onam Celebration
In every year  conducts Onam celebration with ‘Onam Sadhya’ and cultural programs for the students and faculties of EC department. The Director, Principal and Head of the departments were present at that auspicious moment.

Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) is India's leading recognized professional society devoted to the advancement of Science and Technology of Electronics, Telecommunication & IT. IETE today, is one of the prominent technical institution to provide education to working professionals in India and is fast expanding its wings across the country through its 60+ Centres. Since 1953, IETE has expanded its educational activities in areas of Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science and Information Technology. IETE conduct programs by examination, leading to DipIETE equivalent to Diploma in Engineering, AMIETE equivalent to B Tech, ALCCS equivalent to M Tech. IETE has also started Dual Degree, Dual Diploma & Integrated programs from December 2011. The IETE of KMEA conducts and sponsors technical meetings, conferences, symposia to provide continuing education as well as career advancement opportunities to its members. All the staffs and Students in our departments are actively involved in various programs conducted by IETE,Kochi Chapter.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is the national organization of engineers in India. The Institution of Engineers (India) has more than one million members in 15 engineering disciplines in 114 centers or chapters in India and overseas; it is the world's largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in engineering and technology world.The Institution Of Engineers (india) - Kochi Local Centre in Homoeo Hospital Road, Ernakulam has been successful in moulding young and bright minds interested in pursuing the various engineering sciences.We ,the faculty members of ECE are associated with IEI for providing better training to our students.
